New Visions: Or, Church for People Who Aren't So Sure about Religion

FOR_Clayton_1Mark Twain is said to have quipped in 1897, "The rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated." Today rumors are rampant of the impending death of the church. But, although unimaginable transformations await us in the coming two decades, this is not one of them.

Karl Marx thought that religion, like the state, would shrivel away in the utopian society. Yet the human species without religion is about as likely as the human species with a perfect government. (We can't even create a functional government!) Nor is it likely that the world will be pervaded by religions and religious practices but that Christianity won't be numbered among them. In 2030 churches will still exist, along with some of the other institutions that define Christianity today.

The questions are: which institutions will still be around? What radically new forms of Christian existence will arise in the coming twenty years? And, most importantly, what new forms of Christian life and practice do we need now? What forms resonate with today's new types of believers, non-believers, and seekers?

St John The Evangelist Anglican Church, Ladysmith, BC

CursilloThis is a call for all cursillistas, lay and clergy, to come to a 25th Anniversary Reunion and Celebration, September 25, 2010, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at St. Peter's Quamichan. Potluck dinner, Ulrerya, music, speakers.

Come rejoice and give thanks, reconnect, look back, and look to the future, together.

Cursillo, a Spanish word for short course prononced KER-SEE-OH, the short form of the orginial title Cursillos de Cristiandad, a short course of Christianity and Christian living.

The cursillo method focuses on training lay people to become effective leaders over the course of a three-day weekend. The weekend includes fifteen talks, some given by priests and some by lay people. One emphasis of the weekend is on preparing those undergoing it to take the movement's methods back into the world on what's called the "fourth day".

For those who haven't attended Cursillo the strange word Ulrerya means "reunion of reunions" or a gathering of those who have attended the weekend course in, for the Diocese of British Columbia, all those who have attended the course across the Diocese.

This event will take place at St Peter's Quamichan, just east of Duncan on Saturday September 25th and is open to all Cursillo members, course graduates or those curious about it as well as members of the general public.

For more information or regsitration you can contact David Fitzsimmons.  It's appreciated if you register by September 11th.  If you're curious about the broader Cursillo movement in the Diocese and in Canada you can visit the Diocese of BC Cursillo web site or download the PDF.

symbol_miranda_bible_mdEducation For Ministry, also known as EFM, is a four year course of study based on the recovered ideal that all baptized persons are called to the ministry of the whole people of God.  It's important to understand that this includes all peoples of the Earth.

It's also about the vision of an educated, informed and active laity within the Church equipped to carry the message of Christ within and without our membership.  This was clearly understood, and assumed in ancient times by the early church but has been lost, for one reason or another, through the centuries.

The program looks at the Old Testament, sometimes called the Hebrew Scriptures, the New Testament, Church History up to the end of the 19th Century to the challenges faced by the Church in the 20th and 21st centuries in what's commonly known as the western world.

The first two years consist largely of Biblical study and the last two years on the broad path of Christianity since the Resurrection.

The course consists of weekly group seminars led by a Mentor, prayer, meditation and reflection as individuals and as the group.

If you're interested in attending please contact Peter or Jane Fowler at 250-245-3480.

symbol_neal_seekFirst_mdEducation for Ministry began at the Episcopal Church of the USA seminary at the University of The South in Sewanee, Tennessee and came to Canada in 1977 sponsored by the Diocese of Kootenay and the Diocese of Cariboo.

All courses in Canada are administered by EFM – Canada.  The course is open to all baptized Christians though there is a slight Anglican flavour to the course of study.

Contact Pastoral Care

PastoralCareAt St John's we have a team of dedicated people who take part in pastoral care duties.

Care for those in need is one of the most important ways that we carry the mission and minstry of Christ, takes many forms and is the responsiblity of all baptized persons.

If you need care or a visit you do not need to be a member of St John's or even a baptised Christian.  You only need to be in need of someone to lend an ear, perhaps pray for you, to listen and understand.

For information please contact Rev. Daniel Fournier or call Barbara at 250-245-8113.  Any messages will be returned ASAP.

Ministry: Giving Someone A Lift

wrxMinistry is not simply the province of the ordained.  It is also the duty of all baptized Christians to take part, as they can, in some form of ministry.  An expression, as best each of us are able, of the radical acceptance and love Jesus taught us and which we try to emulate.

One expression of ministry is to be available to give rides to those who need rides to and from services and other Church functions.  But it doesn't end there.  There are parishioners and others who need rides to and from doctors and dentists appointments, to shopping and other things to get by in their lives.

These are the elderly, of course, not at all the collection of sticks in the mud you might assume!, they're young families who don't have reliable transportation, young people, and many others.

The "chore" is offset by getting to know those you already know better and meeting new people who can broaden  your outlook and experience in life.  You may even find a new friend!

If you feel called to this ministry please speak to Shelagh Huston or sign up in the little book in the Narthex at the back of the church.
